How Can Surgery Treat Cancer?

Cancer begins when abnormal cells form in one of the body’s organs. These cells reproduce and eventually form a new tissue called a tumor. Tumors then grow blood vessels that allow the cancer to spread to other parts of the body. These tumors need to be removed as soon as possible.

Surgery to remove tumors is a highly effective cancer treatment. If performed early enough, tumor removal is a massive step forward toward recovery. Follow up treatments of chemotherapy and radiation therapy can then destroy lingering cancer cells after the procedure.

What to Expect

The specifics of your procedure will vary depending on the type of cancer. Some organs are harder to reach than others and often require more intense procedures. In many cases, however, tumors can be removed with minimally invasive surgery. Minimally invasive operations only require a few small incisions, are safer than open surgery, and allow patients to recover faster from the operation.

Tumors cannot always be removed by themselves. In some cases, surgeons need to remove the entire organ. Kidney, ovarian, testicular, and gallbladder cancers are just some of the cancers that can be treated by removing the organ. Our team will review all of your options and develop a treatment plan that best meets your specific needs.
