Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) has received the American Heart Association’s Check. Change. Control. Cholesterol™ Gold achievement award in recognition of its commitment to reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke through improved cholesterol management.
Cholesterol is one of the primary causal risk factors for the development of atherosclerosis. More than 86 million adults in the U.S. have total cholesterol levels of 200 mg/dL or higher, and only slightly more than half of them are appropriately managing the condition.[1],[2] High cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. If a person has other risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure or diabetes, their risk increases even more.
“The Check. Change. Control. Cholesterol initiative makes it easy to implement research-based clinical guidelines into our practice,” said ARMC Chief Medical Officer, John H. Brill, M.D. "When we can offer consistent care backed by the American Heart Association’s evidence-based guidelines, we can help more people in San Bernardino County control their cholesterol.”
To help people better understand their risk and learn to manage their cholesterol, the American Heart Association launched its Check. Change. Control. Cholesterol program in 2017, part of the American Heart Association's Outpace CVD™ suite of programs advancing outpatient cardiovascular care through technology and quality improvement. Participating practices have access to tools and resources that allow clinicians to easily implement guidelines set forth by the American Heart Association to improve cholesterol control.
