Burn Center

The Edward G. Hirschman Burn Center Burn Center Team

Located on the second floor of Arrowhead Medical Center (ARMC), the Burn Center provides complete burn care to patients of all ages and serves four counties: Inyo, San Bernardino, Riverside and Mono. Dedicated and caring, the Burn Center team provides comprehensive care individualized to address each patient's needs. More than 300 patients are admitted to the burn center each year on an inpatient basis, and about 100 patients are seen each year on an outpatient basis. More than one third of the patients admitted as inpatients to the burn center are under 18 years old. In the 14-bed burn unit, patients are cared for by specialized nurses, general surgeons and plastic surgeons teaming up to provide the best care for patients with burn injuries.
Additional members of the burn team include:

  • A case manager who follows the patient through hospitalization and follow-up
  • Respiratory, occupational and physical therapists
  • Dietitians
  • Social worker
  • Pharmacist
  • Psychiatrist
  • Pastoral core (clergy)

In addition to caring for hospitalized patients, the center also offers an outpatient clinic to address the needs of burn center patients who have been discharged from the hospital.

Burn Prevention Education

The Burn Center also provides burn prevention education throughout the community, helping to reduce burn injuries to children and adults. Training and clinical experience are provided for paramedics, occupational and physical therapists and nursing students. In addition, the Burn Center sponsors burn camps and support groups for burn survivors. The Embers of Hope camp is held at least once a year to provide a healing experience for children who are burn survivors. The camp provides support and counseling to help bolster self confidence. Children learn that there are other burn survivors who have had similar experiences. Camp volunteers include off-duty firefighters, medical staff and adult burn survivors. Camp Beyond the Scars is available for burn-injured children between the ages of 5 and 17.

Burn Support Group

The Burn Center's support group aims to assist family members in understanding their role in treatment and in helping them to become familiar with the physical and emotional stages of burn recovery. The burn support group also educates patients and family members about various types of burns and appropriate treatment. This includes both the care provided in the hospital and in the outpatient clinics. The support group also helps with planning related to re-entry into school for younger children and entry back into the work force or community for adults.
The Burn Center has a Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention program to show children the physical and emotional costs of playing with fire. Fire-setting intervention considers family circumstances, the child's circumstances and the incident itself.
