Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. Overall, the lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 4.3% for men and 4.0% for women. Surgical resection offers the only potentially curative option for patients with colorectal and GI cancers.

For many years open surgery, which requires a large incision across the abdomen, remained as the standard technique for treatment of many abdominal diseases. With advances in technology, laparoscopic surgery through tiny incisions has gained popularity among the patients because of its advantages.
