Electrophysiology (EP) Lab
Why Would You Need an Electrophysiology (EP) Lab Procedure?
The EP Lab is used for patients with heart rhythm problems, including:
-
Atrial fibrillation or flutter: irregular, fast heartbeats
-
Ventricular tachycardia: dangerous fast rhythms that can affect pumping
-
Heart block or slow heartbeats: may require a pacemaker
- Syncope (fainting) due to arrhythmias
- Palpitations that disrupt daily life
-
Assessment for advanced rhythm therapies such as ICD or CRT devices
Purpose: These procedures can prevent complications, improve quality of life,
and reduce the risk of stroke or sudden cardiac events.
When is an EP Lab Procedure Needed?
Procedures may be
urgent or
planned:
-
Urgent / Emergent:
- Life-threatening arrhythmias
- Severe symptoms requiring immediate monitoring or intervention
-
Elective / Planned:
- Persistent palpitations or dizziness
- Atrial fibrillation management
- Device implantation (pacemaker, ICD, CRT)
Purpose: Timely evaluation and treatment can improve outcomes and prevent complications.
How Does an EP Lab Procedure Work?
-
Preparation
- Review of medical history and medications
- Instructions on fasting or medication adjustments
- IV lines and monitoring for safety
-
Procedure
-
Small catheters are inserted, usually through the
wrist or groin
- Electrical signals are measured to locate the source of arrhythmias
- Depending on findings, interventions may include ablation or device placement
-
Recovery
-
Most patients are monitored in
cardiac telemetry, CCU, or CVICU
-
Recovery time varies: same-day discharge or overnight stay for device implantation or complex
procedures
-
Follow-Up
- Post-procedure review with your cardiologist or electrophysiologist
- Medication adjustments
- Long-term rhythm monitoring
- Referral to cardiac rehab or lifestyle programs as needed
Purpose: Ensures safety, effective treatment, and ongoing heart health management.
